Journalism Assignment #1

         Mumbai, interrupted....again

“Again...what does she mean by again? Mumbai was interrupted in 2008. This is 2009 dear. WAKE UP.” Loads of you would have this very thought in your mind as you read the title. But I am not disillusioned and I have certainly not lost my sense of time. Tune in to any news channel on the TV and you will know what I am talking about. The same images that were flashing on 26/11/2008 would be flashing ‘again’. Taj will burn ‘again’, CST would be wounded by Kasab’s A.K 47 ‘again’, the sound of screams, gunshots, and the view of dead bodies will make you shiver ‘again’, the political parties would blame each other ‘again’, the intelligence would be questioned ‘again’ in short you will have the repeat telecast of those fateful 64 hours again.
But my question is “Do we need it again?  ” Is reliving the past with ‘exclusive footage’ correct. A year back this attack affected every Indian in some way or the other. We realised the futility of life. How a birthday, wedding anniversary or business dinner in posh hotel could turn into your last. How you could be shot while trying to catch your train back home. We realised that we were not safe anywhere. We lost trust in police, intelligence, army...in short we lost trust in the system which governs us. Not just the Mumbaiakars...deep down most of us were affected and it took time for things to get back to normal, or I should add that it took hell lot of time for Mumbai to rise again this time. But it did rise and this is what it is important.
Replaying the same tapes again, showcasing the same images again, holding the same discussions again will recreate the same fear. Nobody likes sad recaps because the same pain resurfaces. I know for people who lost their loved ones in this attack this day brings back tears but there is no benefit of putting all this up on LIVE TV. Because by doing this they are not decreasing their suffering in any way but on the other hand they indirectly make millions of other viewers afraid, restless and sad again. This kind of ‘journalism’ recreates panic. Life is all about moving forward. So rather than bringing back painful memories media should focus on what has changed. Are we any better off than last year?  Has the government done something to strengthen our security? Grieving families do not need media footage. What they need most is silent milieu, not just for remembering what they lost but also for figuring out how to move forward. Thrusting a mic on woman’s face who lost her husband to this carnage a year back and asking how she is feeling is what I call downright insensitive. You cannot even imagine her pain.  Reliving those moments is not important, what’s important is to ask that why it happened in first place. Let’s look forward not backwards. Discussions should be held not about what happened but why it happened and what is being done to not let it happen again. I think this would be the best TRIBUTE for the ones who lost.

  1. Good writing!...Guess, we just get used to people bombing us. Heck they bomb us today, people would just say "Oh! that was expected. What a shame government couldn't do anything. The spirit of mumbai wins again and people would do the same Again!

  2. Rightly said..it's a year since those dreadful terror attacks on Mumbai, that stunned not only the city, but the entire country.
A year ago,Mumbai people were busy with their business and ,not for a moment imagined the end of throes of celebration, smiles and glows!
In a matter of merely 60 hours, there was a gruesome loss of lives, loss of religion and country and above all..a lose of humanity!
I expect that we never have to face this catastrophe again.but we cant just sit,n and expect the impossible to happen.
None of us remember the lessons we ought to have learnt from the Mumbai attack for a year and then suddenly aftr a year,we hold candles and lay floral tributes, and for that matter, our government is the last to learn the lessons.because even today, the safety of a common man ,in our country,is at stake. The terrorists won't wait for us,before they hit us again.

  3. loss be it whatever form is always avoided...so why not in this aspect, lets elect efficient people who can protect us and not just play with the cash that is to be used for our benefit, implement productive thoughts, raise voice against the odds and question the wrong doers and condemn their actions by all means and ways, let us bring the long awaited change , by atleast being aware of our surroundings and keeping a vigil over them !

  4. Very Correct....
A lot done by media is wrong today
A lot is to be done by the government to make our life safer and better.
But a lot could be done by us.
A lot wrong is done by us which is making them grow stronger.
1.Any sort of piracy make them grow stronger.
2.Any sort of Bribery is making our society enervate.
3.Any sort of favoritism is also affecting us.
Basically what i want to say is although a lot is to be done by government but definitely we can also do something.
help bringing the change u wish 2 c in dis world..!!

  7. It is a Thursday....
    a year has passed....
    but it seems like yesterday....
    when she was asked....

"How do feel to now that you have survived?"

    the question remained unanswered then....
and so will it forever remain....
coz how does one feel if you are alive....
after having lost the most precious person of you life....

She is standing at that very place....
and they are discussing the same stories again. they are always first in the chatter's race...
she smiles and wonders in vain.

will they ever stop and think....
how could all this happen in just a wink....
with just one last look at Taj's dome....
she turns around to go home....

she prays she'll not have the same dreams....
it was just yesterday it seems..
but a year has passed since that day....
    today is a new Thursday..
