Happy Birthday Sakshi!!

The first Enginium11 month ....starts with a bang and ends with a bigger bang!!! No dear members its not our ongoing recruitments which excites me so much . Its our dearest Editor’s Birthday which makes this day so special.
The first thing you are going to notice about her is aN innocent flashy smile. Exams, MBA, Enginium or that ever ringing cellphone; nothing can shroud her that very nonchalant attitude.
That sheer quality to handle ‘never ending’ workload  and yet be the first one to swing with some ‘Atkaas and Jhatkaas’,  whenever  its party time. Her passionate poems and mighty articles have always been a delight to read . But inspite of being  a ‘towering figure’ in our college Sakshi has always been  a grounded  person and polite in her manners.
Enginium...Enginium...Enginium, well there is more to her than what meets the eyes.  Pepsi  fan and pizza lover,  she can laugh out loud even at the stalest pjs. She’s all ears as soon as someone cries,”chalo bunk karo yaar” and doesn’t mind catching a wink when lecture is more of  like a bedtime story.
Luv  you Saki for your sweet and serene nature . Respect u Sakshi  for your persistent determination for Enginium. Enjoy your day and while you cut your cake make sure you have your pockets full; because this calls for a ‘BADDA wala treat’
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR EDITOR

APPLYING THOUGHTS...

Business tycoons in a way rule the world. Most of the richest persons happen to be from the corporate world. Many business tycoons from India are now emerging in the map of world's richest people. Indian entrepreneurs are making waves all across the world. Indian business firms are making acquisitions abroad and spreading their tentacles in various corners of the world. Indian Entrepreneurs have proved all doomsday prophecies wrong and on the contrary have flourished under globalization. Knowing about their life, how did they achieve success and what all they contributed to the world, is quite inspiring as well as stimulating. There are many business tycoons in India as well as in the world who started their life as ordinary men and their biographies are the rags to riches stories.

One of them is Azim Hashim Premji, Chairman of Wipro Technologies based in Bangalore. He is an icon among Indian businessmen and his success story is a source of inspiration to a number of budding entrepreneurs. Born on July 24, 1945, Azim Hashim Premji was studying Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA when due to the sudden demise of his father, he was called upon to handle the family business.

A few of us know this but when Azim Premji occupied the hot seat, Wipro dealt in hydrogenated cooking fats and later diversified to bakery fats, ethnic ingredient based toiletries, hair care soaps, baby toiletries, lighting products and hydraulic cylinders. Thereafter Premji made a focused shift from soaps to software. In the 1980s Wipro entered the IT field, taking advantage of the expulsion of IBM from the Indian market in 1975. Under his leadership, a Rs.70 million company in hydrogenated cooking fats has grown to a $500 million diversified, integrated Corporation in Services, Technology Products and Consumer Products with leadership positions in the businesses it is in.

Talking about Premji's contribution in technological aspect, the very first thing that comes to mind is its Next Generation "Global Command Centre" (GCC), the remote managed services Hub, provides Wipro customers a technology agnostic, secure managed services environment. Its advanced feature like 'Password Vault' that provides one time access to restrict password sharing, "sick-system only access" that ensures that systems that do not have a problem cannot be touched, multi-location service delivery for robust risk mitigation and "business impact reporting" that enables clients to see the live business impact of IT services on a 24x7 basis make the GCC one of the most robust and secure remote managed services platforms in the world today.
Also its 'w-SaaS', a platform for rapid software-as-a-service (SaaS) enablement of business applications using Oracle Grid Computing and Oracle application grid middleware for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) will help ISVs enable their existing business applications to operate in SaaS model in a non-intrusive manner with minimal re-implementation, and enable the traditional single tenant application to operate in an efficient multi-tenant mode.

Its joint venture with Motorola to form a company, WMNetServ, that will deliver public and private network customers with managed services focused to provide 24/7 network monitoring capabilities to customers using Global Network Operation Center(GNOC) platform, shows tenacious attitude of Premji for success even at this age.

Premji has also dished out "NewLogic" which is a leading Semiconductor Design Services Provider and Supplier of Intellectual Property (IP) cores for complex wireless and wireline applications. The services span over Digital, Analog, Mixed-Signal, RF based SoC (System-on-chip) Design. Wipro-NewLogic is the world leader in the sale of IEEE1394, WLAN, Wireless USB and Bluetooth IPs. It's wireless LAN IP space that is being used today for mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and performance-oriented applications such as DSL/Cable modems, help in demonstrating how to apply the verification techniques needed when designing a complex wireless SoC.

Premji's efforts make Wipro Infotech to be rated as the No. 1 green brand in India and among the top 5 global green brands in the world. It's energy efficiency and structured programme for effective e-waste management along with Wipro EcoEnergy provides Clean and Sustainable Energy Solutions for all kinds of spaces from Factories to Institutions and from Office to Home. It has recently entered water treatment business and provides Ultra pure water treatment systems and solutions for various industries. The company is pro-actively providing information to individual customers on recycling collected e-waste rather than mere disposal. It has also restricted the use of hazardous substances in the manufacturing aspects of the business.
Over the years, Azim Premji has been privileged with many honors and accolades. He was chosen as the Business India’s ‘Businessman of the Year 2000’. He was named by Fortune as one of the 25 most powerful business leaders outside the US again Forbes in March 2003, listed him as one of ten people globally. The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education have both conferred honorary doctorates on him. He is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Committee for Information Technology in India. No doubt one finds Premji in the Forbes Billionaire List 2000, placed in 41st position with a wealth of $ 6.4 billion. And in the year 2001, he established Azim Premji Foundation, a not-for-profit organization with a vision of influencing the lives of millions of children in India by facilitating the universalization of elementary education. Premji contributes the financial resources for the foundation.
Being an absolute workaholic he believes work to be the only way to survive in a competetive environment. Premji’s story of success and prominence clearly shows how determination and perseverance, when coupled with knowledge, clear vision and proper planning, enable one to reach the peak of success and leadership. He truly stands by his words...APPLYING THOUGHTS!!!

Water photography

How to do it?

Equipment
Don’t use any special camera or lens really. You can use use a Canon 5D and a 180mm macro lens but other equipment work that help to create the drops. One of the basic apparatus is:

Mariotte Siphon

It is called the “Mariotte siphon”. It is well-known to people who do irrigation in rural areas. The head (pressure) is dependent on the height between the bottom of the vertical tube and the final outlet of the liquid. You can build one using a soda bottle, a plastic drinking straw, and epoxy.

Depth of field
There are three things you can do to get more depth of field:
Use a smaller aperture – this requires more light and hazards loss of sharpness due to diffraction
Back up some and crop – you will have a better depth of field, at the expense of resolution.
Camera with a smaller sensor : but these have fewer pixels so you lose resolution
Short lens camera: With this the background is not magnified as much as it is with a long lens, so it appears to be in better focus.

Will my camera work for drop pictures?
It is the most basic question that comes to our mind. Well the answer is any camera will do. You can also use an electronic shutter release to trigger the camera. The technique to create liquid sculpture images is as follows:
1. Create the drop(s), somehow, knowing just when it is released.
2. Wait a specific amount of time.
3. Open the shutter.
4. Wait a bit more.
5. Trigger the flash.
6. Close the shutter.
7. Repeat ad nauseum.
Most modern cameras have a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000th or 1/8000th second. That is fast enough to stop many types of motion like single drop splashing.

Water drops are special

Water is a special substance due to few of its properties:
It has the highest surface tension
It has the highest heat capacities of all materials.
It expands (floats) when it freezes.
It is a nearly universal solvent.
The surface tension is responsible for the marvelous splashes. Put a bit of soap in the water and the water drop becomes thin and tall.
The other property of water that is important in determining the shape of water drop splashes is the viscosity. Add glycerin to the water to increase its viscosity.

Techniques

Here are the basics:
1) Camera & Lens
use only digital cameras for this work. Take tens of thousands of pictures because one shot will not be enough.

2) Light
Leave the shutter open for a relatively long time (in a darkened room) and use a flash to illuminate the splash. The flash needs to be of a fairly short duration to stop the motion well. Control the amount light output by varying the flash duration. The shorter the duration, the less light .So, you can get a short duration by setting the flash for low power (1/16 or 1/64).
3) Control
The usual means of capturing drops is to release the drop from a dropper and use an electronic circuit to recognize when the drop is in motion, wait for a precise amount of time, and trigger the flash. The important thing is to have a reliable, repeatable method. The timing needs to be accurate to 1/2 millisecond (1/10 millisecond is preferred). Since an average fall time might be 1/2 second, the timing should be accurate to one part in a thousand, or 0.1%.

4) Liquids
They are willfully non-linear. It seems that everything in the world affects how they behave: viscosity, surface tension, density, temperature, the shape of the dropper, and what the cat had for dinner. Learning to control these variables is what demands the patience and creativity.
Increase the viscosity with glycerin (because it doesn’t affect the surface tension much). Use dishwasher rinse aid to reduce the surface tension (because it doesn’t create bubbles, like soap does).

Colour Blindness: In an Unusual and Good Way

The dictionary says that colour blind are those who have the inability of a person to distinguish between two colours.

I wish to live in a world where every-one is colour blind....hold on, do not misunderstand me!! By the above statement I mean to describe a world where there is no discrimination on the basis of skin colour.

As we all are aware of the fact that the fair-skinned people enjoy more privileges than the one with a dark tone. It is core truth that the former have more avenues than the latter.

This discrimination on the basis of complexion dates back to the late 1800s when apartheid was practised in South Africa. The blacks were enslaved and forced to do numerous arduous jobs and what they got in return were meager wages. The whites on the other hand savoured every freedom. They mastered the blacks. It was apartheid that gave birth to the custom of discrimination on the basis of skin tone, and as years passed this practice gained grounds.

Recently, we have come across so many issues on racial attacks in Australia. The Indians were brutally assaulted in those foreign lands just because they had a darker tone than the Australians, apart from other grudges. The day is not far when this heinous practice would prove to be one of the major reasons behind the countries waging wars.

In my opinion, people living in this era should be oblivious to racism, lack an understanding of racism, have minimal expectation from blacks and may profess to be colour blind. The society should suppress dichotomy associated between blacks and whites. Racial and cultural differences should not be considered as important. One should always remember that it is not the complexion but the deeds of an individual that adds an extra credit to his personality.

Thus, its good to be colour blind if we want to live in a fair and just world.
